Music from Itapoan, and You Can Stay Here Too!

Composer Octacílio Rocha (black hat below) -- like so many of Brazil's top musicians -- needed a day gig, and his was to open a musical pousada (guesthouse). Octacílio's Encanto de Itapoan (Itapoan Enchantment) is situated just off the beach in a Salvador neighborhood which was also home to immortals Dorival Caymmi and Vinícius de Moraes.

Music rules here, and below is one of Octacílio's compositions (Desordem) sung by muse (and daughter) Bia Rocha. We hope you enjoy it, and should you find yourself poolside here, we hope you'll enjoy that too!

About Our Hotel (Pousada)!

Olá! We are the Rochas (a Brazilian/English couple), and our Encanto de Itapoan (a small hotel or pousada, along the lines of a guesthouse / bed & breakfast) is ideally situated for those wishing to avail themselves of both the fabulous city of Salvador da Bahia and of Salvador's most fabulous beaches. We also have a strong affinity for Brazilian music; it sets the tone for our establishment...the song in the player above left, for example, was written by Octacílio (father) Rocha and is sung by Bia (daughter) Rocha.

Breakfast (including an expansive array of tropical fruits and juices) is served poolside, and our rooms come equipped with queen-sized beds, hammocks and air-conditioning, internet connections, frigobars, cable television and safes. We pay minute attention to every detail having to do with the comfort and security of our guests, and we are here to offer personal orientation in a way you'll understand:Restaurants, nightlife, beaches and barracas, acarajés and barzinhos, music, history, and tours -- we know the scene and we'll fill you in."Encanto" is Portuguese for "Enchantment", and we like to think that our pousada offers exactly that from its privileged position in one of Salvador's most storied neighborhoods.(Note: For those of you new to Brazil, pousada is a Portuguese-language term for a guesthouse or small hotel.)

Rádio Encantado is straight out of Encanto de Itapoan...it's what we listen to here, the music -- samba, choro, bossa nova -- that wafts out over our breakfast/dining area and pool. Our preference of course would be that you listen to it here with us...but if that's not possible right now, no matter...you can listen wherever in this world you happen to be at the moment...

And we sincerely hope that wherever that happens to be, it is as enjoyable for you right now as it is for us, here and now, in Itapoan!

The title says it all - our stay here was a highlight of a week in the Northeast of Brazil. Pousada Encanto de Itapoan had it all - the quiet getaway, the making of new friends and a memorable night out.

Being on a side street, 100 m from the beach, Pousada Encanto de Itapoan was a sanctuary when you needed it. The room itself was nicely decorated and very comfortable. My wife and I spent time sitting on the balcony of our room enjoying the fine weather and the birds which would come to rest on the wall.
